Information is Power
“When Mr. P.K. Howard enrolled in WHA’s ten-week Introduction to Computers class, he had one goal -- to help his son build his construction business. Having recently retired, Mr. Howard had little experience with computers. “I didn’t even know how to turn it on,” says Mr. Howard, “now I’ve used my new computer to get on the internet and email.”
Many students who enroll in WHA’s Technology Center have never taken a computer class. They come with the desire to learn a new skill, find employment, start a business, or learn to access and use the Internet. They leave with the knowlege that information is power.
WHA’s Technology Center provides classes in Introduction to Computers, Microsoft Office Suites, Microsoft Word, Web Design, and Network Training and Certification. The Center has 16 workstations and serves community residents, business owners and youth. Classes are held Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The Center is open for use during hours when classes are not in session.
Accomplishments:
- Since 2002, over 2,000 students have used the Technology Center.
- A ten-week Network Training and Certification class was implemented to teach advanced-level computer networking skills.
- WHA was awarded the U.S. Department of Human Services “Models That Work” award for its innovative technology program to connect 68 neighborhood blocks.
