Our Community

A key factor to Austin’s continued growth is the level of commitment of its residents to transform the community.”

Of Chicago’s 77 communities, Austin is the largest with a population of 117,527.  For decades, Austin struggled to regain its glory after the community lost its economic base with the closing of several major manufacturing companies.  Nearly 100,000 jobs were lost.  Businesses abandoned the area.  Streets were lined with neglected storefronts.  Vacant lots dotted the landscape.  Realizing that communities are strengthened by thriving economic and business development, WHA developed a bold vision for the Austin community — the Austin Wellness Center —  a healthcare facility at the intersection of Chicago and Cicero Avenues.

Along with business growth, new and rehabbed housing is now apparent throughout the community.  Neighborhoods are thriving once again with renovations and repairs on older homes that were once neglected.  Contributing to Austin’s attractiveness is an abundance of historic homes and bungalows.

Besides Austin’s economic assets, its spiritual and social assets are also vital to the community’s growth.  Several churches and parks provide an opportunity for neighbors to reach out to help each other.  A key factor to Austin’s continued growth is the level of commitment of its residents.  Austin residents help each other and provide guidance for youth.  Their willingness to support their neighbors continues to transform the community into a place of sharing, caring and giving for our future.
